In his book
"The Potts' Factor Versus Murphy's Law", Stanley Potts outlines many
adventures, and a few misadventures, of a lifetime truly lived to
the fullest extent possible in remote country, whether in his native
Idaho, Nevada where he spent part of his adult life, or Alaska and
the Yukon where he pursued big game and other activities. For
many years, Stan Potts outfitted and guided in some of the wildest
country in America, the fabled Frank Church Wilderness of
north-central Idaho, and while he contantly battled the nagging
intrigues of the infamous Murphy's Law in play with an even greater
tendency (which he calls the Potts' Factor) for things to go wrong,
if there was any possible way they could. Stan Potts has this
to say about "The Potts' Factor Versus Murphy's Law":
"This book came
about because of a bad accident that nearly claimed my life on
October 6, 1999. (See Chapter 25 - The Longest Night.)
During my several months recuperating, I had the time to do what my
family, friends and clients in the hunting business had urged me to
do - write a book."
There are
incidents in the book from a hodgepodge of life's happenings.
(See lists of life's different vocations and avocations in the
book's Introduction.) Over the years, people sitting around
the campfire or table and listening to some of the stories contained
herein often said "You should write a book." Well here it is,
and we will see if I should have 'wrote a book'!
In
Look Down on the Stars, his second book, Stanley Potts delves into
more rich detail of the incredible life he's lived in the remote
land of the America West -Idaho and Nevada in particular- and shares
many stories, including a few hair raising ones, of his many
escapades growing up in and spending a lifetime in the back
country. He became one of the country's most famous bighorn
sheep guides and shares some stories out of those experiences
in Look Down On The Stars. However, he also brings the reader
along with him with humorous and heart warming stories about how
this great land shaped him as a youth, as a young man, and then an
adult, who in turn, helped shape ways for people to get into this
wild land and enjoy it as much as he does. In addition, his
dedication chapter pays tribute to an incredible lady, his mother,
Sarah Gray Potts, with a series of stories that, if they had stood
alone, would have made this book a winner. Stan and his wife,
Joy, make their home in Shoup, Idaho.

The Potts Factor's Return is the newest book of the
series that Stanley Potts has written and had published. In
this newest book (2006), as with the previous two there is a
hodge-podge of 72 years of memories of ranching and running an
outfitting business in Nevada and Idaho, hunting trips from the
northern Yukon , Alaska, British Columbia, Idaho and Nevada.
It is also interspersed with mining and Idaho wilderness history,
airplane and flying stories, horse and airplane wrecks, life flights
and ambulance rides, and tributes to some of his animals, along with
his recent induction into "The Idaho Legends of Rodeo/Cowboy Hall of
Fame". Many of the stories have a touch of humor and also poke
fun at the author. The stories are true and constantly
shadowed by "The Potts Factor" (which appears to be similar to
"Murphy's Law"), but expanded in its' extremity.
Potts' description follows this scenario in most
instances. "it very simply states that if something has 50/50
chance of going right, it will go wrong nine times out of
ten!" Potts says some of his readers have informed him that
the chances of him ever being accused of being a writer are very
slim but that he tells a hell of a good story to print!
Accordingly, in his introduction he says, "Here are more of my
stories in print. The stories are not sequential, any one of
them will lull you to sleep as well as the rest!"
